Eagles End Season with Road Victory
The Williams Baptist College soccer Eagles have had to endure a lot throughout the 2012 season, but they ended their season on a high with an overtime victory. The 2-1 win came over American Midwest Conference foe Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis.
The Eagles' offense was lively early on in the contest but was unable to get one past Spartan keeper Nemanja Pandzic. The poor finishing went punished when Spartan midfielder Joe Whitacre got behind the defense to open the scoring and give MBU the 1-0 advantage.
Despite being down at halftime the Eagles fought hard in the second half, doubling the shot total of their opponents with eight. The first goal came in the 70th minute when Freshmen Gabriel Sitibaldi followed up a corner kick to stick the ball in the net.
"It would've been easy for our players to quit and give up. They have gone through a lot this season, but these guys don't give up on each other or this team," said Head Coach Shane Stolz.
Both teams would have chances to finish the game in regulation without success.
Three minutes into the first overtime, junior Victor Vouga found space on the edge of the area to produce a shot that found the bottom corner to give WBC the victory.
"I am proud of not only Victor but the whole team. We were pressing for the game winner and with tired legs, but we found the strength to get the win," said Stolz. "The win will give us momentum going into recruiting and the off-season. Obviously, we would like to be headed to the playoffs, but that was not in the cards this season."
The Eagles finish with a record of 2-12 on the season and 2-6 in the AMC.
